king ghazi is shadi khries and gilbert cohen. recorded in amman / may 2014. all the music presented here is original, and has been recorded in jordan in may 2014. this project was born when i met shadi in paris, at the percussion recording sessions for acid arab. from these sessions came the idea of&#8203,,,,,exploring local music styles on the verge of disappearing, in jordan and elsewhere in the middle east. it was also an opportunity for me to meet exceptional people and wonderful artists. for 15 days, we travelled through jordan, recording local musicians. here we hear osama al khairat aka abu sayah, an exiled syrian musician who plays the yarghoul (two flutes linked together by beeswax. one plays a drone, the other the corresponding range, all while blowing continuously). i want to specially thank shermine sawalha for allowing us to record in the living room of her parents house, as well as for coordinating the whole project. without her energy and patience, this record would not be in your hands today.

uk techno veteran broom is one of the most consistent producers in the game and on neon, he delivers four killer dance floor tracks. inspired in equal parts by the swirling, dub techno of chain reaction and the insistent, loopy techno of mid to late-90s jeff mills, the release starts with the steel-plate percussion and churning chord builds of -m19-. broom keeps his focus on that approach for -energy-, where doubled-up claps and clanging chords create an eerie but urgent sensibility, while the title track is a slightly less visceral affair thanks to the inclusion of a sleepy vocal sample amid the churning keys. finally, -involver- sees broom focus his energies elsewhere, its acidic, grimy groove coming across like steve bicknell in a bad mood.

rezzett are arguably one of the trilogy tapes goto acts. the london duo has previously released a trio of impressive, off-kilter eps of fuzzy house and techno jams for will bankheads much-loved imprint. happily, zik zak is every bit as essential as their previous material, expertly blurring the boundaries between techno, experimental electronics, and distorted hardcore. while the drowsy-but-sweaty hey hugo all sampled vocal yelps, sweeping chords and clattering percussion is probably the most obviously ear-catching of the four cuts, theres plenty to get excited about elsewhere. check, for example, the intricate electronics and eyes-closed loveliness of the title track, and the fluid melodiousness of opener afyon or, for that matter, the comforting bliss of ep closer noklue.

after the striking debut release on nothing odd recordings found label owner sam smith sitting comfortably alongside baby ford for an exploration of subliminal house and techno, nor002 finds smith donning the alias monty the fly and expanding on his own vision for stripped-down dance music brimming with psychoactive tendencies. across the three tracks there is a diverse range of moods being drawn on, from the meditative to the mechanical, all fused together by what some might consider an obsessive eye for detail. there s meditation in the air in places, with mysterious pads and heavy splashes of reverb soaking out into some corners in the time-honoured dubwise spirit of transcendental electronic music. elsewhere brushed percussion and disembodied vocals shape out a more sinister message, lending themselves to a sound world both immersive and disorientating in one fell swoop.

the us producer recently joined the ranks of talent residing in berlin and its evident the european techno capital is having a subtle sway on his sound on the basis of this apotheke ep, most notably the title track. theres a sense of driving momentum wedged deep in the sonic dna of this track, complemented well by a low slung bassline and airy synth melodies. elsewhere huertas sometime studio sparring partner urulu adds some percussive flex to the pulsating swing set, whilst kingsleys groove swerves the sound back towards deeper house and is apparently named in honour of a friends cat. glenn astro of the tartelet crew ends the release with a wonderfully bumping take on the track.

gacha is a young artist originally from georgia, now operating in berlin, this second ep for apollo records is an excellent six tracker that fits the apollo chillout manifesto perfectly. his music is a cinematic, glacial mix of beautiful melodies, treated guitars and tender drum programming, and two tracks on this release see him working in tandem with natalie beridze who adds her ethereal vocals for standout tracks *saysea* and *atlas*. elsewhere on the ep gacha continues the form of his last ep, working his influences from classic electronica to garage into his trademark deep and atmospheric sound.

horo was a cloak attached to the back of armour worn by elite samurai messengers in wartime. capturing an elite tsukai-ban messenger wearing a horo was a coveted prize and in much the same way, a release on horo is a prize, a reward for artists willing to experiment, take risks and truly progress. this has been demonstrated by the fact we now have artists writing music specifically for the horo series.

techno fans in new york and chicago should be pretty aware of jeff derringer by now. since launching oktave in october 2009 with partner kevin gregor, the former indie rocker has turned a passion for deeper electronic music into a respected dj and promoter career. but it is as a producer that jeff has begun to earn rising recognition elsewhere-throughout the us and beyond-with his records infiltrating europe via support from the likes of silent servent, chris leibing and peter van hoesen, along with many others that have graced oktave over the years.

tony ollivierras issued a generous number of singles and eps under the ibex moniker on rushhour, planet e, yore, and his own ibex music, and now follows up his 2010 yore release, meltdown, with absolution, though this time under his birth name. no matter: ollivierras music sounds great, whether issued under his real name or an alias, and absolution is no exception. the infectious title cut gets things moving with a bass-powered blend of claps and funky rhythms before chunky house chords and silken synth figures add to the tracks multi-layered splendour. a jazzier dimension rises to the surface of quick release when the tunes churning hi-hats are joined by royally swinging electric piano playing and luscious synth pads.phase down opts for a purer deep house sound in its focus on kick drums, claps, and futuristic synths, though the track proves that ollivierras naturally funky side cant help but emerge, here as it does elsewhere.

2009 was a great year for these days records, and 2010 promises to be even better. the platform stood out for its innovative yet functional club sound and unique artwork concepts. the new year begins with a new split series under the name universal consciousness, based on the idea of connection between all things, and that all things have been coordinated, and they combine to make up the same universe. the first part is dedicated to two very different takes on spiritual, cosmic space techno. on the a-side argys >sometimes im blind< generates a long and uplifting emotional climax, which features a solo that will forever stay in your heart. the track was recorded at the end of 2008, and despite numerous offers to release the record elsewhere, nothing was finalised and the recording never saw the light of day. soon after the birth of his own label, it naturally fit the platform and seemed a perfect way to start the new year. on the flip side, sheffield born alexander ross, brings forth a cavernous techno piece awash with reverberation and spacial echos that brings a driving yet non the less emotionally captivating moment perfectly in balance with the depth of the a-side.

spirit catcher is becoming more and more a permanent member of the systematic family. after their debut e.p. last year and their contribution to the >5ysyst< project last summer, these three tracks are their latest productions on my systematic imprint. something which always impresses me a lot is how jean and tom continue todevelop their distinctive spirit catcher sound, no matter if they release on 20:20 vision, nrk, moodmusic or elsewhere. its always an awesome mixture of fluffy driving house beats, a portion of deepest darkness and freshhypnotic sounds figures! i love the way how they do install the dark organ melody at >sedona<. the organ soundspretty outta space and lets me float away once i have closed my eyes. also, the mystic mood at >future fools<generates me a goose skin, every time i hear it. altair nouveau is among the spaciest of dfaÆs recent signings, a producer clearly as in love with the soundtracks of john carpenter as he is with italo covers of classic rock tunes. >space fortress< saves its best for the final two minutes with a synthesized trumpet lead thatÆll have you either pumping your fist or reaching for the off switch. >showdown<, meanwhile, more adequately gets at mitchellÆs soundtrack love, with its pleasantly percolating backing track giving a chance to various sounds to prove their worth. >sorcerer< embraces the hints of flourish that mitchell dropped in spots elsewhere, and goes full-on with the funk. itÆs tough, well-produced and a little bit funny to listen to in the privacy of your own homeùjust like the 80s soundtrack music that it so readily recalls.
